Aromatherapy and the use of essential oils for healing has existed for some 5000 years.
When we peel an orange, walk through a rose garden or rub a sprig of rosemary between our fingers, we inhale the scent of that plant. What exactly is it that we can smell? Generally speaking, it is the essential oil which gives a plant its specific scent. Essential oils are complex mixtures of individual chemical constituents, the precise nature and proportions of which determine its therapeutic and fragrant properties.
Essential oils occur widely in the plant kingdom, not only in flowers, leaves and fruit but also in the root stems and in other parts of green plants.
The olfactory region of the brain is closely associated with the limbic region – the part of the brain that is regarded as being the center of emotions, memory, sex drive and intuition. The limbic system is also connected to parts of the brain that control heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure and stress levels. Further, the olfactory region connects to the hypothalamus, which controls the entire hormonal system by influencing the pituitary. This gives us a good idea as to why the aromatic compounds of plants (the essential oils) can have an “aromatherapeutic” effect.
These aromatic plant compounds can provide a facet of daily self-care that is accessible and safe. In this class, you will learn the science behind aromatherapy and how you can implement it into your own daily self-care.
In this class, not only will we explore the medicinal and aromatherapeutic function of each essential oil, but in open discussion together, we will delve into the feelings and reactions that each oil inspires (good or bad). Based on your individual experience with the oils, we will help you to customize two aromatherapy blends to make and take with you, addressing your daily self-care needs.
